The TDSB is
closing 39 out of its 79 pools in June 2009. The City and the TDSB currently
have no plans to meet to discuss how to keep them open.
Why should the
City care?
The City of Toronto has a higher proportion of its public pools in schools than
any other urban centre in Canada. The City offers 45% of its swimming programs
in TDSB school pools.
Why should
you care?
Do you know where you will swim after June 2009? Toronto swim clubs, community
swim, and Parks and Rec programming will be further stressed or disbanded
altogether.
What should
you do?
1)
Sign up to speak at the Community Development and Recreation Committee
Meeting at 9:00 AM on Thursday, April 16th. This Committee will hear
public deputations asking the City to work with the TDSB to develop an aquatic
strategy for the City’s 2.5 million residents before any pools are closed.
To request your deputation be heard at this meeting, email:
cdrc@toronto.ca
2)
Come and show your support now before any pools are closed. Even if you
don’t want to give a deputation, please attend the meeting at City Hall, 2nd
Floor, Committee Room 2, 100 Queen Street West, Toronto.
Swim
attire encouraged at this meeting! Please express your views in a safe and
respectful manner. Come have some fun, and let our elected City officials know
you care about the future of aquatics in Toronto.
