ABOUT THE PETITION
The City of Toronto uses the TDSB pools for 45% of its Aquatics Programs, which makes perfect common sense, and is in keeping with the original intent of building pools in TDSB schools to serve Toronto taxpayers and their families. It makes good sense to work together with the TDSB to leverage this existing resource. You don’t need to build new pools, and children will learn not to drown – an important consideration when the City is flanked by one of the Great Lakes.
With community involvement, permit revenues for those pools managed by the TDSB’s Toronto Lands Corporation (TLC) have grown from $300,000 a year to over $1,000,000 in just three years. The revenues are continuing to grow! It was mostly a matter of communicating that the school has a pool, reducing the fees and adding a customer service approach to encourage programming. Share your voice by signing the 'Make a Splash' petition to further inform the public and community groups of these wonderful community assets.
City councillors are aware of what needs to be done. Now we must inform the public to hold our representatives accountable for their votes on Council. At the August 2010 Council Meeting, Rob Ford’s last Council meeting as councillor, he seconded a motion moved by Councilor Stintz (MM52.5) which embraced this bold vision:
“the City needs to commit to full participation in the work of the Toronto Lands Corporation’s Pools Governance Sub-Committee and Aquatics Working Group so that all residents of Toronto can enjoy access to training in water safety and aquatics recreation opportunities.”
Each of these Councillors are still on Council and voted to support the the Stintz-Ford motion: Paul Ainslie, Maria Augimeri, Shelley Carroll, Raymond Cho, Janet Davis, Glenn De Baeremaeker, Mike Del Grande, Frank Di Giorgio, Paula Fletcher, Rob Ford, Doug Holyday, Norman Kelly, Chin Lee, Gloria Lindsay Luby, Pam McConnell, Peter Milczyn, Frances Nunziata, John Parker, Gord Perks, Anthony Perruzza, David Shiner, Karen Stintz, Michael Thompson and Adam Vaughan.
Let's encourage them to keep to their word!
