Due to cuts in the latest
City of Toronto budget,
78
perfectly good
Toronto school swimming pools are
scheduled to shut down permanently
beginning in
June, 2008.
The City of Toronto, the TDSB and the
Province of Ontario all claim they don't
have the $12M to stop the closures.
These are pools that help maintain
children's' health by keeping them
active, allow them to socialize with
their friends, provide competitive
athletes for
Canada's world and Olympic swimming program and, above all, teach
kids
how to swim in a city that doesn't have
as easy access to clean beaches as do other
communities outside of the GTA. Wherever
the funding comes from, these pools are enjoyed by young and old
alike. Once they're gone, there's no getting them
back.
